My experience making granola for the first time began with a cast iron pan and a search for the ingredients that would give Great Morning Granola a unique flavor and taste.
I wanted to create a product that wasn’t just a good way to start the day, but a great way to begin each morning with a spoon full of sunshine in each bite.
Our ingredients are “red, white and blue” as we sourced our Great Morning Granola mix from across the United States from sea to shining sea. We bring ingredients together from the coast and valleys of California to the Shenandoah mountains and foothills of Virginia outside our nation’s capitol. Our goal is to put the “red, white and blue” in your spoon with a burst of sunshine in each bite!
Our quest began in the test kitchen with a search for the “blue” in Great Morning Granola. We found the blue with the addition of culinary lavender and infused lavender in our honey to sweeten each spoonful.
Honey is one of the key ingredients in Great Morning Granola. We found inspiration with a lavender-infused honey at our local Blooming Hill Lavender Farm in Purcellville, Virginia, and added culinary lavender to add to our product. We made our first batch in that cast iron pan in our test kitchen on Netherstoke Farm, outside of Aldie, Virginia.
Lavender originates from the sage and mint family and it is grown across the United States. It is grown from Washington to Colorado to Virginia. It’s uses are many and there are different varieties that offer sweet as well as savory additions to recipes.
Our local culinary lavender adds a citrus flavor to Great Morning Granola. Culinary lavender is often used to infuse not only honey, but butter, gravy and even sugars in baking. It can also be used to also infuse desert products such as cakes, cookies, butters, and ice cream. Culinary lavender can be added in dressings and salads as well. Culinary lavender is the “blue” in Great Morning Granola.
Our culinary “red” is the golden honey made from the bees who buzz around clover fields of the Shenandoah mountains and valleys of Virginia. Our first batches of Great Morning Granola began with honey-infused with lemon and lavender to give it a burst of sunshine in each bite.
The culinary “white” in Great Morning Granola are the toasted oats we roast to a golden brown. These we sourced from Montana in the Western United States. We found gluten-free oats from the fields of Montana through our friends at Trader Joe’s.
From America’s fruit basket in the Central Valley of California, we source sliced almonds, raisins and lemons to put the sunshine on every spoon.
So when you grab a handful of Great Morning Granola, or spoon up a bite, you are bringing America together in your spoon.
